Outbound texts are billed per segment (160 plain characters, or 70 with an
emoji or other special character; longer texts are split into 153- or 67-
character segments). Carrier fees are passed through at cost, per segment, as
the recipient's carrier charges them:

Credits are drawn when the carrier accepts the message: failed sends cost
nothing, fees included.

We file your A2P 10DLC registration for you. Registration fees (brand,
campaign and vetting fees) are not part of these rates: they are billed on
their own invoice, as [Terms §4.3](/terms) sets out. Toll-free verification
has no fee. Carriers usually
review a registration in 3-7 business days, and you can text your own verified
numbers the same day.

## Free tier

The free tier needs no credit card:

- **100 live outbound SMS per month** (10 per day)
- **1 phone number**
- Live texts go only to numbers you've verified (up to 3)
- **Unlimited sandbox**: every endpoint, no caps, no card, no verification
- 30-day log retention: messages, the event log, conversations and API request logs older than 30 days are deleted daily. Opt-out and opt-in records, registrations, billing records and the audit log are kept as the [Data Retention](/data-retention) page says

Add credits to lift every cap, text anyone, keep your logs for the life of the account, and unlock live carrier lookups.

## How billing works

Billing is prepaid. You buy [credits](/docs/credits) with a card (from $5),
usage draws your balance down, and a call the balance cannot cover is
refused with `402 insufficient_credits` rather than billed later. Credits
do not expire while your account is open. There is no platform fee and no
commitment; a month with no traffic costs nothing. Each month you get a
statement that itemises usage, paid from your credits.

Every response that consumes quota returns `X-Quota-Remaining`. When you run
out on the free tier you get a `429` with code `quota_exceeded` and a message
saying whether it was the daily or the monthly limit.

Sandbox (test keys) is unlimited and free forever. It is never metered, never
capped, and never requires a verified recipient; build the whole integration
before you spend anything.
